The Unjust Freedom The way the Americans gained independence may not be as valiant as it seems. The war lacked just war criteria despite many arguments. The idea was foolish and unnecessary and proved the lack of development amongst this young territory. Many factors lead to this premature uprising and the French and Indian War is a great reason for most of those factors. The decision by the American colonists to revolt against British rule was premature and overly aggressive. The American plea for a Revolution did not meet the criteria of a just war. The factors for a just war are as follows: probability of success, last resort, proportionate cause, comparative justice, competent authority, just cause, and right intention (Keown American). For a war to be just, the war must meet all of the criteria for a just war. Though it’s hard to name a war that met all of the just war criteria, it is just as hard, if not harder to name a war that was justified. At the time, the probability of success would be against the colonists. The British had the best navy in the world at the time and were a global powerhouse (Keown American). The fight was not a Ê ºlast resortÊ º because independence had been gained from Britain without raising arms (Keown Ê ºAmericanÊ º). The colonists lacked proportionate cause because the colonists already had financial issues and needed foreign mercenary aid to help finance the fight (Keown Ê ºAmericanÊ º). The Old Man and the Sea Essay Free Online Research Papers The Old Man and the Sea is a very complex novel; there are symbolic meanings behind everything. This novel was written by Ernest Hemingway, the tale of this old man in Cuba was based on himself his life. The old man named Santiago and the boy named Manolin would fish all of the time together. The boy and the man once went eighty-five days without catching a single fish but they never gave up hope. The boy’s parents made him work for a different boat but the old man knew the boy still had faith in him. The old man would encounter many troublesome conflicts with himself and his surroundings, but one of which could be the battle for his life. The old man has fought through a lot of things, but the cramp in his left hand was painful. It could not have come at a worse time, he had just caught the marlin and now would have to fight it and try to kill it with one hand. The old man’s left had failed him before, like when he was arm wrestling in Casablanca. â€Å"He had tried a few practice matches with his left hand. But his left hand had always been a traitor and would not do what he called on it to do and he did not trust it† (Hemingway 71). The old man’s hand was stiff and he could not get it to stop cramping, and if he needed it to get the marlin he would have to open it forcibly. The marlin was very unique about how he handled being on the line. The marlin would not thrash around or jump out of the water. The old man battled the marlin for three days living without sleep or much food: Then he began to pity the great fish that he had hooked. He is wonderful and strange and who knows how old he is, he thought. Never have I had such a strong fish nor one who acted so strangely. Perhaps he is too wise to jump. He could ruin me by jumping or by a wild rush. But perhaps he has been hooked many times before and he knows that this is how he should make his fight (Hemingway 48, 49). The old man was starting to get confused. â€Å"I do not care who kills who† (Hemingway 92). He starts to give up, but he knows he has nothing else; to live for so he keeps a hold of the marlin and does not cut the line. The marlin finally swims up close to the boat and with everything the old man had he drove the harpoon through the marlin. Santiago had finally accomplished his dream of catching this tremendously large marlin, but what he did not know was the battle had just begun. As the old man sailed towards home the marlin’s blood left a trail of deep red in the ocean behind him. It would not be long until the first shark of the frenzy came to chow down on the old man’s trophy. â€Å"He was a very big mako shark built to swim as fast as the fastest fish in the sea and everything about him was beautiful except his jaws† (Hemingway 100). As the shark came closer his hope started to diminish. Many sharks followed and finished off whatever was left of the marlin and what was left of the old man’s pride, he was truly defeated. The old man is not much a religious man, but he stills turns to God to help him. The old man asks God to help him rid of his cramps and to help him catch the marlin. â€Å"I am not religious, he said. But I will say ten Our Fathers and ten Hail Marys that I should catch this fish† (Hemingway 65). God and the old man’s prayers have helped him through the fish and his cramp, but will it help him when the sharks come to feed? The marlin and the old man develop a relationship while they are battling each other. The old man refers to the marlin as his brother, but the old man realizes that this is also his rival. He says that the marlin is strong and wise but so is the old man. As they fight through the three days he gains more and more respect for his adversary. Except for the birds and the fish he is completely alone away from any sort of civilization. The old man has been on a struggle with the sea for three days trying to keep him sane and to get this marlin. He starts talking to the birds and wishes he was like them to be free. After the battles the sharks off he finally reaches ashore it was a whole other fight to get himself back to his shack, he was extremely weak and tired. The old man left with a broken heart and no pride, all he could do was sleep. The tragic and eventful novel of The Old Man and the Sea had symbolic or biblical meanings behind it in which some refer to the author’s life. The old man’s dream of catching the marlin had come true but was shortly ended by the treacherous sharks. The old man wanted to show the town that he still had something left and that he was not just a helpless old man and did not want people to pity him. The small sizes of the lenses means that a simple design can give good optical quality but sometimes unwanted effects arise due to optical  diffraction  at the small features. It’s been about 14 years since the tv show ended and yet it’s still the highest rated T.V show on IMDb. This show is relatable, funny, and quirky. Its about six friends living and doing life together. Each character has there own fun personality that makes it easy for anyone to relate to at least one of the characters. This show gives a lot of life lessons that we can all take into consideration. While each character has similar qualities, they also have their differences. One of the main characters on the show named Joey Tribbiani played by the actor Matt Leblanc, taught the audience to be yourself no matter what others think about you.   Rachel Green played by Jennifer Aniston, teaches us if you work hard and youre confident, you can accomplish anything. Chandler played by Matthew Perry   and Phoebe played by Lisa Kudrow, both teach us that just because you are an adult doesn’t mean you have to grow up. In society today we see the struggle and competition to look and act a certain way. For her it was to work in fashion. â€Å"Given the opportunity, we could be successful pooling our knowledge, our skills, and our passion for building something brand new† (Goodman). In the episode â€Å"the one with Rachel’s inadvertent kiss† season 5 Rachel finally lands a job at Fortunata Fashion. She thinks that this is her big break into the fashion world until she soon realizes that shes an assistant getting coffee for everyone. It wasn’t until in the later seasons she lands a job at Ralph Lauren as an executive. In life we may not get the dream job right away but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Sometimes in life we have to be patient and pers istent in what is placed in front of us until new opportunities come along.   While sometimes that easier said than done that doesn’t you can have fun along the way. Life is too short to be serious all the time and sometimes you need a good laugh to keep you going.   This show did a really good job with giving the characters Chandler and Phoebe a light hearted look on life. In one of Chandlers witty saying he says, â€Å" I say more dumb things before 9 A.M than most people say all day.†   With Phoebe’s character we see a free spirited person with a positive outlook on life and always seeing the good in any situation. â€Å"Yes, there is a time and place when it’s important to take things seriously. These are times that involve compassion, empathy, and introspection. However, most situations we find ourselves in are actually not worth fussing over. In fact, they are perfect opportunities for taking a lighthearted approach to living† (Sicinski). This is such a valuable life lesson we can all take into consideration when dealing with trials and hard circumstances in life.   Life is a long journey and we just got t o enjoy the ride even if its bumpy. This show is great because of it’s relatable life lessons anyone can take into consideration no matter what is going on in our lives. The show emphasizes on a lot of diversity in society and brings it to light. F.R.I.E.N.D.S inspires people to be and accept who they are. It showed people motivation and confidence can allow you to accomplish your hearts desires.   It allows people to be okay with the fact that we don’t have it all together and sometime you got to be goofy. â€Å"Just live your life the way you want. And laugh as much as you can while you’re at it. Especially about yourself†(Foroux). Dealing With Woodpecker and Sapsucker Tree Issues Many woodpeckers and sapsuckers are tree bark-feeding birds with unique clinging feet, long tongues, and specialized beaks. These beaks are designed to help with communicating the possession of territory to rivals and locating and accessing sap and  insects. This is done mostly by rapid drumming  and pecking noisily on tree trunks with their beaks. There is a big difference between the two birds. Sapsuckers Versus Woodpeckers The insect-eating woodpecker (family Picidae) has a long tongue - in many cases as long as the woodpecker itself - that can be quickly extended forward to capture insects from the inner and outer bark. Woodpeckers explore decaying cavities on trees and spots that have active insect activity. Woodpeckers tend to feed only on dead or dying wood and are generally considered harmless to a tree.  They do not feed on  tree sap  like their sap-sucking cousins, which can seriously damage trees.   You can tell the difference between the birds that have been visiting your trees by the holes they leave behind.  Sapsuckers have a tendency to  form lots of small holes in horizontal lines. This allows for sap to flow out when they are feeding. Meanwhile, the holes left behind by woodpeckers are larger and can be found in different spots up and down a tree.   The sapsucker is a serious tree pest. The most common sapsucker in North America, also the most destructive, is the American yellow-bellied sapsucker. The bird is one of four true sapsuckers in the family Sphyrapicus.   The American yellow-bellied sapsucker can attack, kill trees, and seriously degrade wood quality. Sapsuckers are migratory and can affect different tree and shrub species on a seasonal basis throughout eastern North America.  It spends summers in Canada and the northeastern United States and migrates to the southern states in the winter. Trees in Danger Certain tree species, like birch and maple, are particularly susceptible to death after being damaged by yellow-bellied sapsuckers. Wood decay, stain fungi, and bacteria may enter through the feeding holes. A USFS study concludes that when a red maple has been fed on by a sapsucker, its mortality rate goes up to 40 percent. Gray birch is even higher, at a 67 percent mortality rate. Hemlock and spruce trees are other food  favorites but seem more impervious to sapsucker damage. The death rate for these trees is at one to three percent. How a Woodpecker Feeds A woodpecker searches the surfaces of tree trunks and branches for wood-boring beetles, carpenter ants, and other insects. The pecking style they use for feeding is very different than their territorial drumming, which is done mainly in the spring of the year. When looking for insects, only a few pecks at a time are made. Then, the bird explores the resulting hole with its specialized bill and tongue. This behavior continues until an insect is found or the bird is satisfied that one is not there. The woodpecker may hop a few inches away and peck at another place. The bark holes created by this feeding activity often occur randomly  as the bird explores with pecking up, down, and around a tree trunk. This pecking style, for the most part, does not harm the tree. However, it can be a problem when a bird decides to visit wood siding, wooden eaves, and window frames. Woodpeckers can become destructive to property, especially wood cabins that are near mixed urban and woodland zones. How a Sapsucker Feeds Sapsuckers attack living wood to get at the sap inside. They often return to the tree to increase the size of the holes for more, fresh sap. Insects, especially those attracted to the sweet sap exuding from sap holes, are often captured and fed to the young during the breeding season. Repeated attacks of feeding  sapsuckers  can kill a tree by  girdling,  which occurs when a ring of bark around the trunk is severely injured.   In the United States, yellow-bellied sapsuckers are listed and protected under the  Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Taking, killing, or possessing this species is illegal without a permit. How to Repel Sapsuckers To discourage sapsuckers from feeding on your yard  tree, wrap hardware cloth or burlap around the area of attack. To protect buildings and other outside personal property,  place lightweight plastic bird-type netting over the area. Visual control using  toy plastic twirlers  fastened to the eaves, aluminum foil, or brightly-colored plastic strips are somewhat successful in  repelling birds by movement and reflection. Loud noises can also help but may be inconvenient to maintain over an extended period of time.   You can also smear on a sticky repellent.  Deer repellent  is also said to discourage feeding when sprayed on the tapped area. Remember that birds may choose another nearby tree for future tapping.
